STABLE MANAGER

JUNIOR COUNSELOR
Junior Counselors are responsible for assisting the counseling staff in any way needed. They are there for support and to offer new ideas and insight into programming and daily activities.

In instances where YMCA Camp Mohawk provides an opportunity for staff to attend a certification training program such as ropes course, archery, canoeing, rowing, sailing, lifesaving, etc., Camp Mohawk will pay the course fee. Time spent attaining certifications at Mohawk’s expense is not reimbursable. In the event of early departure from Mohawk, the course fee will be prorated and any balance due will be deducted from the contracted compensation amount.
DAY CAMP COUNSELOR

CABIN/ACTIVITY
COUNSELOR
A counselor is responsible for developing a cohesive cabin group and for the health and welfare of all campers in that group. Special cabin activities, scheduling, and camper counseling are all part of the Counselor’s responsibilities. The counselor works closely with her Co-Counselor to develop a “team” approach to cabin leadership. Where appropriate, counselors provide guidance and training for Junior Counselors. She also works with the Unit Leader to create a strong and enthusiastic unit program.

The counselor position is the most important aspect of a good camp program. Yours is the primary position in developing a safe, enthusiastic, spirit-filled camp. Your first concerns must be for the campers, as their needs dictate your actions. Special attention must be given to new campers so they will feel at home quickly, while old campers need that extra spark to keep camp new and exciting. Listen to your campers as you work together to select classes, activities, and special programs.

General Responsibilities:

Leadership and guidance of a cabin of up to 10 campers in the program established by the camp and the Unit Leader.

Specific Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility for the health and safety of each member of the cabin group.

Supervise the health and safety regulations for members of the cabin group.

Supervise and/or assist daily cabin activities, rest period, meals, capers, etc.

Guide the group in participation in group, unit, and camp-wide activities.

Work closely with the Unit Leader in coordinating activities.

Hold cabin discussions each evening.

Attend and participate in all unit and all camp staff meetings.

UNIT LEADER
The Unit Leader is responsible for the coordination of unit programs, including special evening programs and overnights. In addition, the UL will work with the Unit staff to help create a cohesive staff-camper group. She will help handle unit problems in the appropriate manner. The Unit Head will inform the Associate Director of any problems or concerns with the unit or request assistance if necessary. Planning here often is on a short notice basis due to weather changes and camper interest. Therefore, flexibility is important. The UL should work with the campers and staff to plan unit activities.

Specific Responsibilities:
​Within the limits of approved policies, programs, budgets, and procedures, the Unit Head is responsible for and has the authority to fulfill the duties listed below. The Unit Leader may delegate portions of this responsibility, together with necessary authority for their fulfillment, but may not delegate or relinquish overall accountability for results.

Know each camper as an individual.

Create a meaningful experience for Unit campers and staff.
-
Acknowledge accomplishment on the part of campers and staff.
-
Keep staff members informed of progress and results of assigned work, unit programs, and all camp activities.

Discuss each counselor’s cabin activity plans daily: be sure planned activities provide variety, safety, and fun, and are suitable for the age group. Attend cabin activities daily to be aware of what transpires. Handle cabin devotions in a like manner.

Insist that reports and lesson plans from counselors are accurately completed and on time. See that your own paperwork is handled in a like manner.

Avoid dictatorial methods, but be firm if necessary in your relationship with counselors and campers. Give guidance to counselors and give suggestions when needed. Avoid negative criticism whenever possible.

Develop and implement programs and plans for Unit Activities.
-
On opening and closing days of each session, welcome campers and meet as many parents as possible.
-
Provide ample opportunity for each counselor to develop her leadership potential and initiative. Discuss with them their program suggestions and incorporate their helpful ideas into the program.

Provide sufficient leadership by establishing flexible schedules for on duty in unit.
-
Schedule Unit ODs for each day and sees to it that the OD knows her responsibility.
-
Inspect each cabin and unit areas daily. ULs are responsible for the cleanliness of their cabins and unit.
-
Be alert for faulty equipment within the unit and eliminate hazards that might cause accidents, see that fire extinguishers are full at all times, and report all maintenance needs to the camp office in writing.

Attend daily Administrative Staff Team meetings.

Communicate with the Program Director any concerns regarding program, staff, or campers.

Review Fun Factors as necessary (at least every three days).

OFFICE ASSISTANT
Responsible individual who has a knowledge of database and word processing as well as general office duties and responsibilities.

SUPPORT STAFF

Set up and operate dishwashing machine, wash all dishes, cups, glasses, pitchers, serving pieces, etc.

Set up silverware container with water on table in the dining room.

Put out buckets of bleach water for the washing of the tables. After meals, empty buckets and soak cleaning cloths in bleach water.

Assist counter person to fill water and juice pitchers.

Take out trash bins after each meal.

Responsible for cleaning inside of dishwashing machine after each meal.

Clean counter after each meal.
-
Assist with the serving of food.
-
Put away clean dishes, silverware, etc. in proper places.

Hat or hairnet must be worn at all times while on duty. Apron must be worn at all times while working in the kitchen. Proper footwear must be worn at all times. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to provide adequate food services. This position has one day off per week. Average work day is ten hours, but hours are not consecutive. Check-In work days are longer.
Note: One of the daily Lighthouse cleanings occurs after all campers and staff are in bed – after 11:45pm. Staff working this shift do not work the breakfast shift.
MEDIA DIRECTOR
Responsible for Daily Updates, information technology, database management. Must have knowledge of digital cameras, creative writing skills, and basic database management skills.

- Responsible for taking an adequate number of high quality photos to allow for the posting of a minimum of 36 photos daily.

Driver:
- Drive 12-passenger van with campers and staff when needed.
- Responsible for transporting campers to local health care facilities on short notice.​ -

- Responsible for entering deposits on Check-In days.

- Management of Store usage, alerts to Quarter Master about overcharges, and management of staff charges and payments.

CAMP DRIVER
Responsible for management of all consumables, management of camp store and personnel, all driving responsibilities and vehicle maintenance.

Initiate a system for the management of all consumable program, store, and maintenance inventories. Implement such system to the end result of all program, store and maintenance personnel having supplies adequate for the delivery of their program and/or service.

Manage the camp store including personnel training and supervision, record keeping, facility maintenance and inventory.

Responsible for driving staff and campers as needed. Responsible for daily inspection of vehicle and appropriate maintenance.

WATERFRONT DIRECTOR
The Waterfont Director provides leadership to Mohawk Aquatic programs, including daily instructional programs, recreational swim management, on site staff training, small craft instructional programs, and site management.
This position will have primary responsibility for delivering a high quality, safe experience to aquatics participants and staff. The successful candidate will be expected to manage a diverse program of aquatic activities operating simultaneously through application of organized standards. For example, during Optional Recreation Period, the Waterfront Director will be responsible for assigning and positioning guards to the docks for Recreational Swim of sixty swimmers while several other staff are assigned to supervise, guard and assist campers enjoying rowing, canoeing, sailing, kayaking and fun-yaking. The individual in this position will be a full member of the Mohawk staff and involved in all camp activities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide leadership to Mohawk Aquatic programs including daily instructional programs, content, camper development, instruction, recreational swim management, on site staff training, small craft instructional programs and site management.

Participate as a member of the Mohawk staff team in camp programs and other assigned responsibilities, including Officer of the Day, Unit Coverage, Special Events, and Ceremonies.
Specific Responsiblites:

Work with Waterfront Staff pre-season to:
a. Set up dock system.
b. Prepare beach, flags and buddy boards.
c. Maintain fences.
d. Review lesson plans.
e. Review Risk Management plans.
f. Conduct lifeguard course with waterfront module
g. Conduct CPR classes for Mohawk staff as necessary. -
Primary responsibility for the health and safety of participants and staff while engaged in Waterfront activities.

Conduct initial Sunday afternoon “swim test” screening of all campers, assign buddy numbers, and place campers in appropriate skill level swim classes.

Assign staff as appropriate to instructional roles in swim lessons, synchronized swim classes, and small craft classes.
-
Responsible for “hands-on” supervision of all after-hours utilization of the waterfront by cabin staff, including evening sand castle building contests, cabin outing in row boats and others.

Train, supervise, and evaluate all staff assigned to the Waterfront. Conduct weekly rescue drills as a part of on-going training.

Maintain the Mohawk Waterfront according to applicable American Camping Association standards and State of Connecticut Youth Camp Licensing requirements.

Involvement with Unit and all-camp evening programs as assigned.

Involvement with all camp responsibilities which all staff share on a rotating basis: Officer of the Day assignment, dance chaperone, participation in ceremonies, and occasional cabin coverage.
CINDY MORSE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
Provide leadership assistance to the YMCA Camp Mohawk for Girls resident camp and supervise the CIT program.

Essential Functions and Duties:

Provide support and guidance to staff.
a. Assist with leadership to Special Events, all-camp events, and ceremonies.
b. Communicate with parents as necessary. -
Provide leadership assistance to the YMCA Camp Mohawk for Girls resident camp.
a. Execute program with assistance of Associate Director and Program Director.
b. Provide support to staff with children in need or exhibiting behavioral issues. -
Relating to leadership development:
a. Provide primary leadership to the Mohawk Leadership Development Program.
b. Assist with development and delivery of the pre-camp staff training agenda.
c. Provide ongoing training and support to camp staff throughout the season.
Job Qualifications:
-
The Leadership Development Director should have at a minimum, one season of administrative experience (Assistant Director, Program Director, etc.) with a substantial resident camp program or its equivalent. She should have a commitment to the YMCA’s mission and purpose and knowledge of how it is accomplished through programming.

She must have demonstrated personal leadership ability and skill in accomplishing program goals through the involvement of other people – both employees and volunteers.

The Leadership Development Director must have sound management skills related to: program development, communication, supervision of staff, public relations, problem solving, volunteer development, and leadership training.

This position requires competence in the use of word processing, Excel, and Power Point software.

This position requires an individual who can walk one mile in fifteen minutes including stepping over natural obstacles and can lift a 14″ X 18″ X 36″ object weighing 40 pounds to a height of 48 inches.

Instructor level credentials in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable but not necessary: challenge course, aquatics, equestrian sports, dramatic arts.

Familiarity with American Camp Association standards for resident camps is highly desirable but not necessary.

CAMP NURSE
The Camp nurse is the overall health officer for camp. Duties and responsibilities are numerous and varied with the major emphasis being placed on maintaining a safe and clean operation.
Responsible to: Camp Director
Status: Seasonal Exempt
Job Qualifications:

R.N., A.P.R.N current ARC First Aid and CPR certifications.

Able to walk one mile over rough terrain in under 15 minutes without any assistance.

Emotional maturity, good moral character, and integrity.
-
Enjoyment of the out-of-doors.

An understanding and acceptance of the fundamental aims and objectives of the YMCA in general and of YMCA Camp Mohawk.
Job Qualifications:
-
During pre-camp training, discuss health and safety procedures, precautions, and routines with staff.
-
Report all admissions to the infirmary to the Camp Director.
-
Guide counselors in regard to their responsibilities in noting and reporting illness, injury or unsafe practices and conditions that might contribute to camper and staff accidents.
-
Check camp for health and safety conditions daily.
-
Administer all medications and treatments according to Physician’s Standing Orders or Instructions for The First Aider. Keep records of all such treatment.

Maintain Health Log and files in accordance with the laws of the State of
-
Prepare the first aid kits for emergency use to all counselors for use on hikes, outpost camps and trips and instruct counselors in current first aid methods. All such treatments must be reported back to the nurse for inclusion in her report.

Be responsible for any drugs, medicines and first aid kits brought to camp by campers and staff and use as directed by physician of the camper (according to prescription).

Give sympathetic ear to staff as their problems surface and work with the program director and camp director as a team in counseling the staff.

In addition to the “Close of Camp evaluation”, make a written report that includes: equipment inventory, requisitions for the coming summer, treatment records of campers and staff, infirmary and hospital admissions, visits to MD, recommendations for improvements and records for insurance company.
